PINK FLOYD: One Continuous Diamond
In celebration of the upcoming 50th anniversary edition of Pink Floyd's ninth album, 1975's
Wish You Were Here, they've taken "Shine on You Crazy Diamond" (Parts 1-5) and combined it with "Shine on You Crazy Diamond" (Parts 6-9) for the 25-minute “Shine on You Crazy Diamond (Parts 1-9, New Stereo Mix).” This is the first time that the song, a tribute to their former and now late bandmate Syd Barrett, has been released as one continuous piece. It's included on the deluxe reissue of the album, which will be out on December 12th in various configurations. David Gilmour recalled “The occasion of going into a rehearsal room and just jamming was something we did a lot of in the early years, and a lot of our early music came out of that. And a lot of ‘Shine on You Crazy Diamond’ came out of that and a lot of the Wish You Were Here album and the Animals album all came out of those sort of sessions where we would just go and kick ideas around in a rehearsal room till something started making sense.”
They've also released a video for the combined tracks featuring original paintings by Noel Fielding that were inspired by Barrett. Fielding says, “I was pretty young when my affinity with Pink Floyd and Syd started. What’s amazing about Pink Floyd, especially with Wish You Were Here, is that the artwork was as good as the music. It is a masterpiece, that album cover, and that album. It’s a masterpiece. And it’s based on Syd Barrett, who is a walking masterpiece.”
You can watch the video on YouTube. Ironically, Barrett, who had left the band in 1968 due to his deteriorating mental health, just so happened to stop by Abbey Road Studios on June 5th, 1975 as they were recording the song. He was overweight and bald, and the band didn't immediately recognize him. Barrett died in 2006 at age 60.
New Coin Honors Freddie Mercury and His 4-Octave Range
Britain’s Royal Mint is celebrating Freddie Mercury with a new coin design that marks 40 years since his iconic Live Aid concert performance. The coin features an image of the Queen front man, head thrown back and holding the microphone stand midperformance. A musical stave that runs around the edge of the coin represents his four-octave vocal range. The first coin was struck by Mercury’s sister Kashmira Bulsara at the Royal Mint in Wales last week. “As Freddie died young, he didn’t get the chance of being awarded a royal medal for his talents in the music world. So to have a royal coin this way is wonderful and very fitting,” she said.
“The coin perfectly captures his passion and the joy he brought to millions through his music,” she added. “I think the design is very impressive and they managed to catch the most iconic pose of Freddie, which is so recognizable worldwide.” The Royal Mint’s director of commemorative coin, Rebecca Morgan, said the timing was perfect for Mercury to be celebrated with his own coin. She said fans had been “calling out” for it and “this felt like the year to do it,” because it’s 40 years since he captivated audiences at the 1985 Live Aid concert, hailed by many as the greatest live gig of all time.
This year also marks the 40th anniversary of Mercury’s solo studio album, “Mr Bad Guy.”
Mercury died at age 45 in 1991, just one day after he publicly announced he was HIV positive. The coins go on sale on the Royal Mint website on Tuesday. Prices start at 18.50 pounds ($24.40) for an uncirculated 5-pound denomination version. A 2 oz. gold proof coin costs 9,350 pounds ($12,315.) The Royal Mint said it will donate a special gold edition of the coin to the Mercury Phoenix Trust, a charity that was started in the singer’s memory and donates funds to those living with AIDS and HIV.
BON JOVI: They'd Need a Prayer to Make It Today
Bon Jovi's former manager Doc McGhee thinks they'd be living on a prayer to make it in today's music industry. The admission came during a Q&A session at this past weekend's
KISS Kruise: Land-Locked in Vegas event when he said, "I think Motley Crue [who he also used to manage] would have happened because of how infectious that was, and how kids connected.
I don't believe Bon Jovi would have made it, because it took too long for us to get to [their 1986 breakthrough album] Slippery When Wet. "Now today, we don't have three album deals. We have one single deal. We have 187,000 songs that go to Spotify every day. That's crazy. And they think that in the next year or two there will be over 300,000 songs (per day) ...
"We used to have an ecosystem that allowed everybody to live, like a reef. The managers could only do so much and eat so many of the fish, and the publishers could only eat so many of the fish... but we kept the reef alive. And now the corporate world has come in here and killed the reef. "So the new kids that come in will say, 'I can't make money touring, it's too expensive. I can't get on Spotify. I can't get on anything, because there's too much clutter, too much information out there.' So, what we're going to do is lose the next Bob Dylan, the next Motley Crues, the next AC/DCs, the next Led Zeppelins, because they're going to say, 'I can't make money doing this, so I gotta go work for my Dad.'
He adds that he likes what he sees in Yungblud, saying, "I think he has that connection piece to people." Yungblud recently collaborated with a band that survived life on the reef, Aerosmith. They will release their EP, One More Time, this Friday. Jon Bon Jovi has not commented on this story.

It's set in an alternate World War One reality where two soldiers on opposite sides of the conflict play a game of chess. "War Is Over! Inspired By The Music Of John and Yoko" will be available to watch on December 1st.
DAVID BYRNE: Talking New Song
David Byrne has released a video for "T Shirt," the new song he's been performing on his current tour. Available on YouTube, it shows a montage of T-shirts containing slogans like “Well-Behaved Women Seldom Make History,” “Make America Gay Again,” “Fight Today for a Better Tomorrow!,” “Embrace Differences,” “Say Perhaps to Drugs,” “Human Rights are Not Optional,” and “No Kings.” Byrne co-wrote the song with Brian Eno, who worked on the
Talking Heads' second album, 1978's More Songs About Building and Food, as well as the two after it — 1979’s Fear of Music and 1980’s Remain in Light. In 1981 they collaborated on the album My Life in the Bush of Ghosts, followed by Everything That Happens Will Happen Today in 2008. Byrne’s Who Is the Sky? tour made a stop in San Francisco last night (Tuesday) and will be in Los Angeles on Thursday and Friday.
