BRUCE SPRINGSTEEN: Born To Be 50

Bruce Springsteen released his landmark album, Born to Run, 50 years ago today (Monday) -- August 25th, 1975. It was the pivotal album in his career, coming after two albums that hardly sold, despite great reviews -- Greetings from Asbury Park, N.J. and The Wild, the Innocent & the E Street Shuffle, both released in 1973. The feeling was that if his third album wasn't successful, it might spell the end of him as a recording artist on Columbia Records. He says there was definitely pressure on him. “Even though my first record had got a lot of attention when it came out, shortly thereafter we kinda slipped back under the radar. This particular record you knew that the spotlight was gonna be on you, so you were always — you were aware of that to a certain degree.”

Springsteen says he spent an enormous amount of time composing the album's title track, which became his first Top 40 hit and was a huge breakthrough for him on album rock radio.

"The music was composed very meticulously, so were the words. The amount of time spent honing the lyrics was enormous. The notebook that I wrote 'Born to Run' in, you would take the first page and you would see a line or two -- 50 pages later you know you'd get something close to the finished song. I think it was this thick with different versions and I wrote and I rewrote it and I rewrote it and I rewrote it." Although he co-produced the title track with his then-manager, Mike Appel, Springsteen ended up bringing in onetime music critic and his future manager Jon Landau to finish the rest of the album, which took 14 months to complete.

"I was having problems creatively in the studio. I just was having a hard time making records. It was a long time in between Wild and the Innocent and Born to Run. And we came up against some problems that we couldn't solve and I talked to Jon and he had some answers and eventually he came in and co-produced Born to Run."

Born to Run was the first album to feature E Street Band members Max Weinberg on drums and Roy Bittan on keyboards, and the last with keyboardist David Sancious and drummer

Ernest "Boom" Carter, who left during its sessions. With Columbia Records spending $250,000 to market the album, Born to Run went to number-three on the Billboard 200, and received great reviews from Rolling StoneThe New York Times and The Village Voice. Three of the album's eight songs are among his most played in concert with the title track having been performed 1875 times -- his most-played song -- followed by "Thunder Road" at number-two with 1584. "Tenth Avenue Freeze-Out" is fifth with 1245. The remaining five songs are "Night," "Backstreets," "She's the One," "Meeting Across the River" and "Jungleland."

Springsteen marked the album's 50th anniversary Friday with the release of “Lonely Night in the Park,” an outtake from those sessions. The song, which is available to download or stream, is accompanied by a selection of photos from the Born to Run album cover shoot.

BILLY JOEL: New Healthy State of Mind

Billy Joel’s daughter, Alexa Ray, from his marriage to Christie Brinkley, says her dad has been “incredibly resilient” in his effort to overcome a curable brain disorder, normal pressure hydrocephalus (NPH) – which affects his vision, hearing and balance. She tells FOX News, "He’s so cool about everything. He’s always playing everything down, saying, ‘Oh, I’m fine. Don’t worry.’ He doesn’t want me to worry, and he’s just cool as a cat about everything..." As for his recovery, she says, "He’s doing his physical therapy three to five days a week, which is really, really important for him right now. He’s adjusted his diet. We had dinner the other night. I said, ‘Dad, what are you doing? You’re not getting the steak? You’re getting chicken instead?’ Like, this is a whole new you here. “He’s suddenly eating eggplant and all sorts of vegetables. I said, ‘Dad, you used to hate eggplant. He’s like, ‘Oh, I’ve learned to love it'. “So I’m really proud of him and how he sort of adjusted his habits, and he’s probably his most healthy actually right now in terms of how well he’s taking care of himself and prioritizing his health. Of course, as his eldest daughter, I’m always looking out for him and making sure he stays on the ball with that. So he’s doing great...“As far as I’m concerned, he’s sharp as a tack..."

The NPH diagnosis caused Joel to cancel all his shows through next July.

In other Billy news, Billy Joel – My Life, A Piano Man’s Journey, an exhibit at the Long Island Music and Entertainment Hall of Fame in Stony Brook, New York since November 2023, will close on October 26th. The museum will retain many of the items, including the piano he used on his Face 2 Face tour with Elton John.

Rob Halford Wants To Do An Album Of Tony Bennett Songs

Rob Halford singing...Tony Bennett? It's more likely than you think. The Judas Priest frontman told "Ultimate Classic Rock" an album of him performing the songs of the late great singer is something he might want to tackle. "There's so many musical things I want to do...I was singing Tony Bennett in the shower the other day and I listened to my voice and I'm going, 'Do I dare to consider something like this?'" Halford says. "And then I go, 'I'm an old man; I can do what I f*****g want!' And I love Tony Bennett...I love all kinds of singers. My love for what the voice can do is always so attractive to me, the ideas, the imagination...So, yeah, I'd love to do that. I don't know how I would go about it, but I better get a move on if I'm going to do something like that."

SUPERTRAMP: Hodgson Has to Give a Little Bit Back

Supertramp co-founder and former member Roger Hodgson will have to share some of his songwriting royalties after all In February 2024, Hodgson came out victorious in a lawsuit filed against him by three of his former bandmates -- bass player Dougie Thomson, saxophonist John Helliwell and drummer Bob Siebenberg. They claimed he'd reneged on a 1977 agreement that entitled them to a cut of his songwriting royalties in recognition of their contributions on the recordings, but a California federal jury found that Hodgson did not breach the agreement.(Keyboardist and singer Rick Davies, who formed Supertramp with Hodgson in 1969, who was also a defendant in the suit, settled with Hodgson in 2023.) But last Wednesday, the Ninth U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals ruled that Hodgson has to pay a share of songwriting royalties that he stopped paying them in 2018.

U.S. Circuit Judge Kim McLane Wardlaw wrote, "Plaintiffs ask that Defendants continue to 'Give a Little Bit' of Supertramp’s songwriting royalties until the band’s songs cease generating revenue. But Defendants believe that 'From Now On,' they are no longer obligated to share royalties." Thomson, Helliwell and Siebenberg were seeking nearly $1.3 million at trial.

The case has been sent back to a lower court for further proceedings. Hodgson left Supertramp in 1983.
