The Internal Revenue Service (IRS) has extended the tax filing deadline to May 1, 2025, for residents and businesses in Florida and at least eight other states affected by natural disasters. This extension comes in response to the devastation caused by hurricanes and severe weather events in 2024 and 2025.
According to the IRS, the extension applies to taxpayers in Alabama, Florida, Georgia, North Carolina, and South Carolina, among others. These states were significantly impacted by Hurricane Helene and Hurricane Milton, which struck in late 2024. Specific areas in Alaska, New Mexico, Tennessee, and Virginia also qualify for the extended deadline due to various natural disasters.
The IRS announced that taxpayers in these disaster-designated areas automatically receive the extension without needing to apply for it. This relief includes the filing of individual, corporate, and various other tax returns, as well as tax payments originally due between October 5, 2024, and May 1, 2025.
The decision to extend the deadline was made to help those affected by the severe weather events manage their tax obligations while recovering from the disasters.
Additionally, the IRS has extended deadlines for other areas impacted by natural disasters. For instance, taxpayers in Los Angeles County, California, have until October 15, 2025, due to wildfires, and those in Kentucky and parts of West Virginia have until November 3, 2025, due to severe storms.
