Fans were in for a surprise when Duff McKagan kicked off his US solo tour earlier this week in Boston. The Guns N' Roses bassist brought out Jakob Dylan to help cover David Bowie's classic track "Heroes," taking on rhythm guitar and co-vocals.

The song has been a mainstay in McKagan's solo repertoire, and he even released a studio version of the cover in September. “Choosing David Bowie’s ‘Heroes’ seemed to be a natural subject matter for me (I am of course, a massive history nerd)," he said when the studio version of the cover came out, "star-crossed lovers in the shadow of the mid-’70s cold-war era Berlin Wall.”

Dylan also famously covered the 1977 hit with his band The Wallflowers for the Godzilla soundtrack in 1998. Watch fan-shot footage of McKagan and Dylan covering the song and see a list of McKagan's remaining solo tour dates below.
