Elton John Settles Lawsuit Over His Memoir With Ex-Wife Renate Blauel

Elton John has settled a lawsuit with his ex-wife Renate Blauel, who claimed that the singer violated the terms of their divorce agreement in his 2019 memoir, Me.

News of Blauel's $3.9 million lawsuit came out this past summer. She claimed that their 1988 divorce agreement prevents either of them from discussing their four years of marriage publicly.

John's lawyers argued that details included in John's memoir were all public knowledge and that the contract applied only to "private and confidential matters."

A statement released this week announcing the settlement explained that both parties are "happy to announce that they have resolved this case, in a way that acknowledges Renate's need for privacy."

"For her part, Renate acknowledges that Elton has acted in a dignified and respectful way toward her in the last 30 years and has always been happy to help her," the statement continued. "They will not be discussing each other, or their marriage, in the future and will be making no further comment about the case."

Blauel was working as a recording engineer when she met John in 1983, during work on his Breaking Hearts album. They married the following year and divorced in 1988.

John came out publicly as gay in 1992.

He has described his ex as a "wonderful woman," but says she was hurt because he couldn't acknowledge who he really was.
